GMCS Joins City and County Leaders for Gallup Day in Santa Fe
Gallup-McKinley County Schools (GMCS) joined forces with the City of Gallup and McKinley County for Gallup Day at the New Mexico State Capitol this week. On Wednesday, representatives from each organization, including Superintendent Hyatt, Deputy Superintendent Hanks, Assistant Superintendent Montano, and School Board Members Michael Schaaf and Kevin Mitchell, participated in a roundtable meeting with Governor Lujan Grisham. The Mayor of Gallup, along with City and County Managers, were also in attendance.
During the meeting, leaders presented key legislative priorities, including transportation, water, infrastructure beautification, and economic development. GMCS specifically highlighted the need for funding to build a new track at Angelo DiPaolo Stadium and to purchase, furnish, and install equipment for the Center for Technology Education at UNM-Gallup. Superintendent Hyatt and Board Member Schaaf also addressed concerns about the growing vaping issue in schools since the legalization of marijuana in New Mexico.
Thursday marked Gallup Day at the Roundhouse, where GMCS Student Ambassadors from all district high schools attended. They had the unique opportunity to be in the galleries of both the House and Senate during the official Gallup Day proclamations and witness the recognition of Gallup Day Honorees. In the Rotunda, students proudly presented the School of Approach, which guides GMCS high schools. Their hard work and professionalism shined throughout the event! Students had the opportunity to converse with Representatives Lundstrom and Johnson and Senators Munoz and Pinto.
