Post-Secondary Success

Post-secondary success in high school refers to a student’s readiness and preparedness to pursue further education or training beyond high school, whether in college, university, vocational school, or other post-secondary pathways. It involves academic achievements, personal growth, and the development of essential skills and technical skills that set the foundation for success in higher education and future career endeavors.

Aligning Education with Future Careers

At Gallup-McKinley County Schools, our Post-Secondary Success initiative is strategically designed to align academic and career-focused education with students' individual career paths and interests. Through robust partnerships and specialized programs, we ensure that our students not only excel academically but also gain practical skills directly related to their future careers.

Academic and Career Pathways:

  • Dual Credit Programs: We partner with the University of New Mexico-Gallup (UNM-G) and Navajo Technical University to offer dual credit courses that align with our "Schools Of" frameworks. This ensures that students receive education that is directly relevant to their chosen career fields.

    • School of Health: In collaboration with UNM-G, we offer specialized courses for students pursuing health-related careers. This partnership enables students to earn credits towards both their high school diploma and a post-secondary degree or certificate in health fields.

    • STEM CORE Program: Specifically tailored for our School of Engineering students, this program includes advanced courses in science, technology, engineering, and math, providing a solid foundation for further education in engineering and technology through Navajo Technical University.

    • School of Business: Offered in-school through adjunct faculty and in partnership with Navajo Technical University, these courses provide students with fundamental business knowledge and skills, aligning with the career-oriented focus of their education. This unique setup allows students to earn dual credits that apply towards both high school completion and future college degrees.

Center for Career and Technical Education (CCTE):

  • Program Accessibility: High school juniors and seniors interested in CCTE courses should consult with their counselors. Selected students are bused to the CCTE for morning classes, depending on their schedules and chosen program of study.

  • Extensive Course Offerings: Students may enroll in one of the following programs at CCTE:

    • Automotive Technology

    • Construction Technology

    • Cosmetology

    • Criminal Justice

    • Culinary Arts

    • Design & Digital Media

    • Fire Science Technology

    • Introduction to Health Careers

    • Multi-Vocational Service Occupations

    • Students Achieving New Directions

Credit Accumulation and Transfer:

  • Earn and Apply Credits: Students can earn between 14 and 18 credit hours per year through CCTE programs. These credits not only count towards high school graduation but can also be applied towards a certificate or degree at the UNM-Gallup Campus after graduation.

Comprehensive Support Systems:

  • Guidance and Counseling: Our dedicated counselors assist students in selecting courses and programs that align with their career goals, ensuring a personalized educational pathway.

  • Transportation Services: To facilitate access to CCTE, transportation is arranged for students, ensuring they can attend specialized courses without logistical concerns.

By integrating academic pursuits with career-focused learning, GMCS is dedicated to providing students with the education and experiences needed to succeed in their chosen fields. Our commitment to aligning dual credit courses with our "Schools Of" ensures that each student's education is a stepping stone to their future career, enhancing both their readiness for post-secondary education and their qualifications for entering the workforce.
